President Karzai: China as a Neighbor and a Major World Power Can Play a Very Important Role in facilitating and promoting the peace process in Afghanistan
4/23/2013
April 21, 2013- In an interview with Chinese Phoenix Satellite Television, President Hamid Karzai has said that China as a neighbor,  a major world power and a friend of Afghanistan could play a very important role in facilitating and promoting the peace process in Afghanistan.

The President described peace as a must and necessity for any nation; requesting the Chinese role in the peace process of Afghanistan.

In response to a question on Afghanistan being known as the graveyard of empires, President Karzai said, We, as you said rightly, are known as the graveyard of empires, not because we wanted Afghanistan to be the graveyard for those empires but because of the way those empires behaved worse and the consequences were the collapse of those empires.

The President stressed that the geopolitical position of Afghanistan could be used in this extremely significant part of the world for the betterment of the Afghan people and for the betterment of the region.

On the importance of Sino-Afghan relations, President Karzai said, Afghanistan views China not only as a good neighbor, as a neighbor that has been doing good for the Afghan people for long but also as the second biggest economy in the world, as a rising superpower of the world and a superpower that is a neighbor of Afghanistan.

The President underscored that continued cooperation of China, Russia, India and other neighbors, was important for stability and progress in Afghanistan.

Calling negative prediction on 2014 and its aftermath, part of the Western media propaganda, President Karzai stressed that Afghanistan would keep on the road that it has taken, and continue to make progress.

In the interview, President Karzai noted, "2014 should be used as an opportunity to strengthen Afghanistan and give us a hand of support that will not only keep Afghanistan stable and strong but will [also] make Afghanistan a country where businesses, where economic activity finds an interest, and it is of promotion to the region as well."

On his legacy to the nation, President Karzai said, The most important legacy that I hope, I would be leaving for myself and the country is that during years of my Presidency, Afghanistan once again became home for all Afghans, all Afghans find the opportunity to participate and nobody is to run from Afghanistan, democracy, parliament, a better economy, education and improvement in the standards of life, and Afghanistan emerging once again on the world stage with our flag flying around, those are all hallmarks of my term in office.

The President stressed, The new President has to keep the ball rolling, has to keep Afghanistan united, has to continue to make Afghanistan home for all Afghans, has to continue to have relations with neighbors and beyond.

On the peace and reconciliation, President Karzai underscored, we are making a general call for all those Afghan Taliban who are not part of Al-Qaida or other terrorist networks, or who are not supporting terrorist networks in the region or parts of those terrorist networks in the region and internationally, to come back to Afghanistan and to participate and live in this country and not to hurt themselves or the country anymore. Now, with regard to those who have committed crimes, it is the Afghan judicial system and the Afghan people, who have a say on matters of that.
